Many people use microwaves only for simple heating tasks but today's advanced units can be used to cook full meals with excellent results.  Speed, convenience and simplicity are all words associated with microwave cooking.

Types Available

Countertop

  • The most common type.  These are generally available in sizes from 0.7 to 2.2 cubic feet.  Colors vary by manufacturer with black, white, and stainless being the standard.  These units simply sit on a counter or shelf and only require a 3-prong grounded outlet for proper installation.  For a "Built-In" look you may also purchase a trim kit that allows installation into a cabinet.  This option is usually less expensive than a true Built-In microwave.

Countertop w/Trim Kit

Micro-Drawer

Built-In

  • As the name suggests these units are installed into your cabinets much like a wall oven.  In addition to the traditional side opening units built-in models are available with drop down doors as well as drawer configurations.  The drawer units are ideal for an island or any other below the counter installation.  These units are sized by the required installation width - 24", 27", 30" - and available in most colors.

Traditional Built-In

Microwave/Hood Combination (Over The Range)

  • These models combine two appliances into one - a range hood and microwave.  They free up counter space while providing ventilation for a standard residential electric or gas cooking surface and offer lighting for the cooktop below.  Most may be installed as vented to the outside of your home or recirculating with the use of filters.  A microwave/hood combination unit should not be used over any commercial style gas cooking surface as the heat output may damage the microwave cabinet itself.

Under the Cabinet

  • These units are similar in appearance to a microwave/hood model but they do no offer the ventilation option.  This would be an ideal option if you wish to free up counter space but are unable to mount it above your cooking surface.

Feature Glossary

Convection

  • A Convection Microwave brings the speed and convenience of a traditional microwave together with the browning and crisping capabilities of a convection oven by using a built in heating element and a fan which shortens traditional cooking time.  By utilizing "Combo" cook, food can be done in half the time.  Imagine making a roast or baking cookies in your microwave.

Speed Cook

  • These ovens are often combined with microwaves to offer better and faster cooking options. Bakes, broils, brown, roasts, and grills fast, with no preheating.  Quartz and halogen light technologies provide the ability to grill; brown, even bake up to 8 times faster than a conventional oven.

Sensor Cooking

  • Ovens with sensor technology take the guesswork out of cooking.  The sensor automatically adjusts cooking times and power levels for your favorite foods.

Preprogrammed cooking

  • Let the microwave know what you are cooking and the microwave will adjust the power level and cooking time according to preset levels.

Auto-Defrost

  • Defrosts foods fast based on weight.

Lockout features

  • Prevent kids from operating the microwave.

Reheat or keep warm settings

  • Some models will keep your food warm for up to 30 minutes with no loss of food quality.

Custom Programs

  • Let you store programming for your favorite recipe.

Cooking Power

  • Generally measured in watts. The higher the wattage of the microwave, the faster it cooks.

Delay Start

  • Allows you to start cooking at a pre-set time.  Have your food ready to serve when you arrive home.

Make sure it will fit!

Measure the space that you have available for your microwave. Know the height, width, and depth of the area you want the new model to fit into before you shop.

*If you are considering a microwave/hood combination you must have 30" from the cooking surface to the bottom of the cabinet you wish to install the microwave to.
