Buying Guide - Trash Compactors

Most people think of a Trash Compactor as an unnecessary extravagance but if you stop to think about it, they can help increase the amount of free space you have in your Kitchen by eliminating that bulky obtrusive garbage can.  With typically only 12"-15" of cabinet space you can reduce the volume of trash in your garbage can by up to 75%.  You can then reduce your daily chore of taking the garbage out to once a week.  Most units have built-in air freshener compartments and seal tight when closed to help improve your home's air quality.

Compactors offer hands free opening with toe bar openers and are easy to load and unload using plastic or paper bags.

Available Types

  1. Free-standing - These units have a finished top that can be used as additional counter or storage space.

  2. Under-The-Counter (Built-In) - This type does not have a finished top and is designed to be installed under your counter between two cabinets much like a dishwasher.  Some manufacturers offer trim kits that allow you to use a custom cabinet front panel to disguise the compactor.

  3. Convertible - Compactors of this nature come out of the box as free-standing but may also be installed under the counter.

Available Sizes

The exact width, depth, and height will vary by manufacturer and model.  Be certain of the measurements of the space you wish to install the compactor into before you shop.  Compactors typically range in width from 12" to 15", height from 34-1/8" to 35", and depth from 24" to 24-1/4".

Safety Concerns

It is of vital importance that you DO NOT place the following items into your compactor:

  • Poisonous Chemicals

  • Flammable Chemicals

  • Explosive Chemicals

  • Containers that may burst under pressure - such as aerosol spray cans

Keep children away from your trash compactor. With crushing force ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 lbs., anything placed in the compactor will be crushed when compressed. Read all operating instructions before using.

Note: A full compactor bag can weigh as much as 50 lbs. Make sure you are able to lift that much weight before completely filling a bag. The more compact the trash, the heavier the bag:

  • Always carry a full bag by the top of the bag or use a bag caddy.

  • If you compact glass, the glass splinters may stick through the bag, Be Cautious.

  • Wear Thick gloves and carry all compacted garbage bags away from your body.

Maintenance

Except for occasional cleaning, compactors are virtually maintenance free.
